“Novik puts a refreshingly dark, adult spin on the magical boarding school. . . . A must-read for fantasy fans.” — Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

Naomi Novik is the acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of the Nebula Award-winning novel Uprooted, Spinning Silver, the Scholomance Trilogy, and the nine-volume Temeraire series. She is also a founder of the Organization for Transformative Works and Archive of Our Own. An avid reader of fantasy literature since age six, when she first made her way through The Lord of the Rings, Naomi Novik is also a history buff with a particular interest in the Napoleonic era and a fondness for the work of Patrick O’Brian and Jane Austen. She studied English literature at Brown University, and did graduate work in computer science at Columbia University before leaving to participate in the design and development of the computer game Neverwinter Nights: Shadow of Undrentide. Over the course of a brief winter sojourn spent working on the game in Edmonton, Canada (accompanied by a truly alarming coat that now lives brooding in the depths of her closet), she realized she preferred writing to programming, and on returning to New York, decided to try her hand at novels.

Her New York Times Bestseller The Golden Enclaves is the third of the Scholomance trilogy.  The series, which includes The Last Graduate and A Deadly Education, describes a school bursting with magic like you’ve never seen before, and a heroine for the ages—a character so sharply realized and so richly nuanced that she will live on in hearts and minds for generations to come.

Buried Deep and Other Stories is her thrilling collection of thirteen short stories that span the worlds of the Scholomance trilogy, including a sneak peek at the land where her next novel will be set. Her newest novella is The Summer War, where a young witch how has inadvertently cursed her brother to live a life without love must find a way to undo her spell.

Process: Lying to Ourselves and Others

The AI company Anthropic recently put out a research paper on their LLM Claude where they found a fascinating difference between the way the model actually does addition of large numbers and the way the model claims to do the addition. This inspired me to think about the way we authors often articulate our own writing processes (often when we’re asked about it in appearances!), and how the way we think we write is often not really the way we do it. In this talk I’ll address how this happens, the ways in which we often inaccurately conceptualize our own work and how that affects the kind of advice we give to other writers, and how we can usefully and interestingly try and reimagine what we’re doing when we write.

Author Naomi Novik (Spinning Silver) reveals her alternate career path, where she reads, and memorable fan interactions.

Brian’s guest this week is fantasy author Naomi Novik! Naomi is best known for her massively successful Temeraire series in which dragons fight in the Napoleonic Wars and was, as Brian recounts in the episode, an early inspiration for his own writing. She’s also written the Scholomance trilogy, standalone novels Uprooted and Spinning Silver, and a host of short fiction. Naomi and Brian talk about international travel and attending conventions, Naomi’s love of fan fiction, her early work in video games, and writing characters—including non-humans—who think differently from modern people.

Curious how writing fanfiction can help you become a professional author? Archive of Our Own co-founder and author of ‘Uprooted’ and ‘A Deadly Education’ Naomi Novik explains all.
